We end the work week off right GoJu Nation by providing you with the Digi-Singles chart. Let me start by giving a HUGE GothamJungle apology for being lax in supplying you with this listing. It’s the industry standard and deserves more respect. I’ll personally take a more involved effort to get you this chart more efficiently. Now lets see what we’re really looking at here.

This Week on Da Charts – Da Albums (by Mive Content)

I’m not gonna let the week escape me without taking care of GoJu Nation. Here are your album charts… Another bleak sales week team. As a barometer, remember that if the 20th album in the country is under fifteen thousand in units, then it’s a down week for sure. Longevity is the key with this chart listing. And your album will have to contain multiple gems to keep this generations attention. It’s worth mentioning that projects in other mediums also have a huge impact on sales. This movie ‘The Hunger Games‘ has officially launched a new franchise. Teenagers went to see this movie 2 & 3 times meaning their money went to popcorn, soda, junk and cinema not music. And when they did by music it was the soundtrack to the movie. So don’t look at this in a vacuum GoJu Nation. Be aware that other outlets are out there gobbling up the disposable income. Now onto da actual charts.

How much does an artist make based on a $.99 single download??

With Eminem winning his latest battle with Universal Music over royalties, it got me digging into what an artist actually makes with these downloads. Now we know the playing field was skewed over the past 60 plus years. And with the digital age being ushered in we now know those previous paradigms are crumbling. But the industry itself hasn’t been going down without a fight. Like a classic boxing match they have been taking punches but refuse to fall. Now there used to be 6 major distributors. That’s down to 3 and with the impending sale of EMI that will leave two. So the stakes are crucial as this continues to play out. Now Chuck D has also files a multi-million dollar lawsuit looking for back digital royalties. And as expected the labels are balking. But here’s the reality. With digital downloads there aren’t any CD cases. No track listing on paper. Just a file download. So those manufacturing costs go out the window. So the royalty rate for digital downloads at minimum needs to be adjusted. But have the labels cared enough to address this? Of course not. That is why major artist have multi-million dollar lawsuits. To get the distributors attention. Common sense dictates that the previous label shenanigans will continue to fall. But we’ll see.

Why You Need A Publicist….

I was asked to explain why a music artist would need a publicist, and that’s a good question, but first I want to explain what a publicist is for those that don’t know (and there are plenty.) A publicist is a trained professional in media relations and branding who will be your liaison with journalists, editors and producers. Lately, that heading has also evolved to include social media expert due to the emergence of so many blogs and websites that have replaced many print publications and the fact that so many of them live on Facebook, Twitter etc.
